EconSM Conference - The Economics of Social Media
Share this video
Web 2.0 pioneers, traditional media players, and just about everyone in between gathered in Los Angeles last Thursday to participate in the Economics of Social Media conference (EconSM), which examined the tremendous changes social media is bringing to every facet of how business is conducted both on and offline. The day of panels and discussions was extremely participatory, and Revver was there in full force sharing our knowledge of this space, taking notes, and having a little fun.
Our pal GameJew stopped by to liven things up, interviewing conference-goers and adding a bit of color (red, actually) to the day - here’s a look. A big thanks to the people at paidContent.org, mocoNews.net, and contentSutra.com for putting this together right here in our backyard.

It’s Flux Dot Friday again. Callie got herself some new bangs, and she got us four Revver videos for this week’s rehash. If there’s a theme to be extracted from the picks, I would say it’s the great outdoors: flubbing weathermen, singing peas, the silver boogie boarder at the beach, and brushfire-starting condoms. Even Callie gets out from in front of the green screen and climbs a tree. She’ll be back down before next week, and she’ll be expecting video suggestions from you guys, so drop her a line at Callie@theflux.tv.
Video of the Day: Coconut Records - “West Coast” featuring Mark Gonzalez
Share this video
I’m not sure why this video works so well, but it does. For your ears there’s a catchy jam from Jason Schwartzman’s new band Coconut Records. For your eyes you have skateboard hero-turned-artist Mark Gonzales skateboarding around a German art museum. Right around 1:58 the video goes slomo and the music goes triumphant, and it makes perfect sense that this guy is wearing a Hawaiian fencing team uniform ollieing down gallery stairs and coffin-ing (you’ll know it when you see it) through cardboard boxes. Mr. Schwartzman tells us:
Here is the video for “West Coast.” I had heard about this documentary that Cheryl Dunn shot where Mark Gonzales takes over a museum, but had never seen it. Since we are doing this record by ourselves without budget for a video, I thought it would be cool to cut that footage to this song, knowing Mark’s fans would want to see it too. Mark was so cool to let me use it. I think it fits the song great. Thank you to Mark Gonzales, Cheryl Dunn, Daniel Field and Tim Wheeler (who re-edited the film to the song).
So Cheryl Dunn shot the footage in 1998. Jason Schwartzman and Tim Wheeler slapped the music on in 2007. And here we are today with what they call synergy.

Revver and INTENT - Monetizing P2P Sharing
Revver and INTENT MediaWorks are partnering up to pioneer the monetization of video distributed via open peer-to-peer networks (P2P). Revver’s unique tracking technology has always made monetized P2P sharing possible, and this partnership puts that possibility into praxis. From the press release:
Revver will become the first online video company to distribute user-generated video content across INTENT’s digital platform, which includes peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. While millions of videos are currently served in P2P environments, monetization is scarce. Revver will distribute thousands of its premium user-generated videos across P2P and, using its pioneering technology to serve ads, will create another new revenue opportunity for its content creators.
“Historically, the P2P network has been a hurdle for content owners, but with INTENT, Revver will tap into the enormous potential of the P2P network legally, giving our users unprecedented access to eyeballs and revenue,” said Steven Starr, Founder and CEO of Revver.
The syndication agreement goes both ways - in addition to syndicating Revver videos on their platform, INTENT will also be uploading several thousand premium videos to Revver, creating multiple new channels on Revver.com for music videos and other entertainment content from artists represented by Violator Management, Nettwerk Music and more.
So what does this mean for you? Well, in addition to some great new content on the network, this all boils down to increased distribution for your videos. Rather than manually making your videos available on the major P2P networks, you can sit back and relax as Intent distributes your Revverized videos throughout their network. Their reach includes most of the major P2P services - Kazaa, Grokster, Overnet, BitTorrent, TrustyFiles, eDonkey, Gnutella, Limewire, and Soulseek, to name a few.
Your videos will continue to be shared under the same Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 license as always, which prohibits people from distributing your video without the revtag/ad and without crediting you as the creator. So your work will still be protected as it is shared and viewed by P2P sharers.
It’s just like Steven said - more eyeballs and revenue!
Video of the Day: SuperBackers

What’s better than a bunch of crazy Tokyo kids running around doing funny and bizarre stuff? Not much. SuperBackers is a brand new production by a group of youth getting behind the things they love - you know, urban hide-and-seek (in drag) and samurai facing off against industrial strength hoses and stuff. Think Trigger Happy TV mixed with a little Jackass and you’re starting to get the idea.
We dig it so we’re currently featuring them, and they dig that so they made us this awesome video. Check out their other videos at SuperBackers.com.
Video of the Day: Datarock - “Fa Fa Fa”

Bergen, Norway, kind of like Athens, Georgia, is one of those small university cities that has an especially fertile music scene and more than its fair share of good bands. One of those bands is Datarock, two Norwegian dudes who blend dance punk, electro, and what can only be called butt rock to make a new wavey blend of super playful party music. The video for “Fa Fa Fa” is as grab bag as their sound, combining the costumed solidarity of a gang from “The Warriors” and the suburban trappings of Penelope Spheeris’ “Suburbia”, and the result is just as rad as you’d expect.
“Fa Fa Fa” is from their first US release “Datarock Datarock,” out June 12. See more videos by Datarock and other Nettwerk Music recording artists here.

One more from Sil van der Woerd, creator of SWIM which we featured last week. Sil wrote, directed, produced, and animated this beautiful short back in 2004, when he was just 21! Since then he’s teamed up with childhood friend Floris Kaayk to start Microbia, a new media initiative that tends to see both filmmakers exploring the intersection of animation and live action. We look forward to seeing more work from these guys - check them out at Microbia.nl.
Video of the Day: My Name Is Bill

Bill Bowles is an interactive world traveler that makes daily video blogs of his travels for you to enjoy from your favorite armchair. He’s always got something interesting and funny to say about his whereabouts, and is pretty much the most likeable guy on the planet. In his own words:
Hello. My name is Bill, and I’m traveling around the world on an open-ended interactive journey that’s more of an experiment than it is a plan. Starting February 19th, 2007, I’m publishing a new video blog every weekday on this site. I have a satellite modem, and so will be able to upload reliably from anywhere in the world. My schedule is still pretty open, and I’m not sure what to expect. But at this point, I’m open to almost anything. Yeah!!
This video sees Bill crossing the Atlantic on an enormous container ship - others include Castle Envy in the Scottish Highlands, Le Caméléon Jazz Club in Paris, and his most recent travels in Madagascar. Peep them all at MyNameIsBill.com.
