Um, have you seen this yet? It looks like someone spent about $250,000 making a 12 minute rock horror musical about Barack Obama. We’re talkin’ costumes, choreographed dances, hair and makeup, steadicams, back-up dancers, and a whole minute of credits. Gaffers and grips don’t come cheap. Is this where all that campaign money is going?

Go ahead, friend them on MySpace.

Another month, another episode of the Midwest Teen Sex Show, another awkward sex-related topic stripped naked and jeered at. I’m not sure what I learned, but I feel more comfortable talking about it now.

Side note: Nikol Hasler, who hosts the show, is my favorite person on Twitter. If you’re on Twitter, add her and you will laugh out loud eight times a day.

I’m a bit confused about what this Garden Party Stories thing is, but I jumped around from link to link for a while and established these facts: there’s a movie coming out called “Garden Party” and these videos by WickedAwesomeFilms have “Garden Party” in their titles. I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of marketing ploy to trick people into blogging about their movie. Oh well. I’m a sucker and I think these are well-done and funny.

Let’s check back in with Lindsay Campbell. Last time we saw her, she found herself caught in an ugly situation where protesters of the Sean Bell verdict lashed out at the media covering the event. Rightly so? Lindsay thought yes. The next day she covered another protest—this one much larger. The cops were out en masse with their pockets full of zip ties. By the end of the day, Lindsay and 215 protesters were eating cheese sandwiches in jail.

friends.pngYou may have noticed that we’ve been beefing up social features on Revver.com recently. Offsite publishing tools like our customizable player are still a priority, but we’ve found that people want to hang around Revver.com too. Since we like having you, why not give you more and more to do while you’re here? Our latest addition makes it easier for you to see what other creators you’re interested in are up to.

We’ve broken up what were previously called “contacts” into “friends” and “subscribers.” Anyone who had added you as a contact is now a subscriber, and you are now subscribed to anyone you had added as a contact. Your subscribers see any new videos you upload in the subscriptions tab in their dashboard, and you see new videos from anyone you’ve subscribed to in your own subscriptions tab. This is a great way to round up all of the content that you want to watch when it’s hot off the presses. To subscribe to a Revver user, just click the subscribe button on a video watch page, or on the user’s profile.

If the subscription thing seems a little impersonal, and you’re actually interested in the creator and not just the content, you have the option of adding users as friends. Unlike subscriptions, friends are a two way street. You send someone a friend request, and they accept or ignore it. If they accept your friend request, both of you are alerted through a news feed when the other leaves a comment on a video, changes anything in his/her profile, or uploads a new video. You can also send messages back and forth to friends if you’re ready for that kind of thing. To send a friend request, just click the “add as a friend” button on the user’s profile page.

Everyone is starting off with zero friends, so don’t feel bad about that. If you’re nervous about your first request, Asi promises he’ll accept anyone.

Video of the Day: What If…

People who know things about things say that at one point in our planet’s relatively short history, all of the continents were bunched up into one super continent called Pangea. This idea of the physical oneness of Earth’s land masses is a nice metaphor for the oneness of the people who now populate these disconnected continents. Working with this idea, Jehane Noujaim created Pangea Day in 2006 as a “global event bringing the world together through film.” From the website:

On May 10, 2008 — Pangea Day — sites in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Rio de Janeiro will be linked live to produce a program of powerful films, visionary speakers, and uplifting music.

The program will be broadcast live to the world through the Internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.

Of course, movies alone can’t change the world. But the people who watch them can. So following May 10, 2008, Pangea Day organizers will facilitate community-building activities around the world by connecting inspired viewers with numerous organizations that are already doing groundbreaking work.

If you’re in LA, it looks like there are public broadcasts in Marina Del Rey and Downtown. Just type your zip code into the event finder here.

Video of the Day: Reaction to the Sean Bell Verdict

Departing from our normally light tone, here’s a heavy one from Lindsay Campbell and Moblogic. A year and a half ago, Sean Bell was killed outside a Queens, New York night club by undercover police officers. The killing was especially notable because of the fact that it was Bell’s wedding day, and because of the fact that the officers fired 50 shots at Bell’s car and no weapon was found in the car or on any of the men in the car. There are, of course, two sides to this story: the officers claim that they heard someone in Bell’s party say that he was going out to the car to get a gun to shoot a woman in the club, and there are disputed reports of a man in Bell’s party fleeing the scene with a gun during the melee. The incident became especially controversial a couple weeks ago when all three indicted officers were cleared of any wrongdoing.

No matter which side you’re on (even if it’s no side at all), the incident has dredged up a number of painful contrasts in American society: white vs. black, rich vs. poor, government vs. populace, media vs. entertainment. Here Moblogic gets stuck in the middle of all those things for a particularly intense report.

Pretty amazing what a cup of purple juice and a thirsty three year old can lead to. If you haven’t seen the trailer for the new Batman movie coming out this summer, check it out here. Then take a look at the above. Spot on, richar900.
